Rocinantes

We -Rocinantes- are an independent humanitarian organization, which mainly gives medical aid in Republic of Sudan.

1. Traveling clinic

We, Rocinantes are travelling around the villages, where they don't have clinics or pharmacies. Currently, we are based in Galaal Nahal, that is 60km away from the capital of Gadaref state. When we face patients who is critically ill, we try to get them to higher hospital to get full medical treat. However, there are many difficult problems such as the lack of support, lack of ambulance service and lack of medical stuff.

2. Exchange program for doctors and nurses

We give exchanging programs at the Ibn Sina hospital that was set by the Japanese government in 1985. This project can take an important role of development of this hospital and furthermore development of the medical situation of Sudan. We invite Sudanese doctors to Japan to see the Japanese hospitals and to go through an experience of Japanese medical service. It can move them one step further on. Meanwhile, we invite also Japanese doctors to Sudan to see the medical situation of Sudan. For surgeons, we offer them the chance to join the surgery.

3. Internship for Japanese students

We accept Japanese exchanging students who empathize with Rocinantes and will to join the activities of us. They not only see hospitals but also deepen exchanges with Sudanese people. We hope in the future that their experience in Sudan can bring pocitive effect in Japan and the international community.

4. Recycling medical devices

Because of closing Hospitals, purchasing new devices and other reasons, many medical devices -though the are still in good condition- get disposed. We collect those second hand devices, and reuse in Sudan.

5. Health nursing education(school for the disabled)

We support the development of health nursing education in Sudan. First, we have invited some doctors to Kitakyushu city Japan, where an active health nursing project is ongoing. In 2006, the first school for the disabled has been launched in Sudan. They have been doing some exchanging activities with school in Kitakyushu, and it's been an important and significant private-level diplomacy.

6. Launching a clinic in Shelif Hasaballa

Acceding to request of the Secretary of Public Health of Gadaref State, we are lauching a health clinic in -the medical desert- Shelif Hasaballa. Shelif Hasaballa is 95km away from Gadaref, where Atbara River flows nearby. It's only 1 hour driving from the border of Eritrea. It is the territory of Lahaween Tribe. They have a slightly different culture from Sudanese, and Sudanese people tend to keep away from there. Because of that, the medical service of Soudanese government is not covered of all. We started with building the infrastructure of clinic. The building of clinic itself was in good condition, however it didn't have running water and distribution of electric power to give an medical service. Rocinantes placed a water storage tank and an electric generator, and thanks to them, we can provide clean water. It can also play a role as a nighttime medical clinic. People there helped us with fixing the other equipments such as beds, tables and chairs. There were ruinous numbers of malaria patients in this village. There are even some severe malaria-infected among them. In these cases, we try to try to get them to local central hospital in Showak. Rocinantes and the central hospital work together for the people of the village. The clinic can't exsist without the financial support of Rocinantes by now, however we are organazing a more independent, efficient clinic so that they don't need our financial support.
